Martin Altenburg, a Fargo North High School student was recently accepted to all eight Ivy League Schools (http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/05/us/nd-teen-ivy-league-trnd/index.html ). As a North Dakota Governor’s School Student over the summer of 2015, Martin performed research in Dr. Sangita Sinha’s lab in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and was mentored by graduate student Karen Glover and an undergraduate student, Samuel Wyatt. Martin assisted with experiments directed at understanding the atomic-resolution structure and mechanism of Beclin 1, a key protein involved in an essential cellular process called autophagy. His acceptance to these Ivy League Schools, confirms the promise he showed as a scientist, with an outstanding ability to grasp advanced biochemistry concepts.
